Michelle Malkin has an excellent article today on a story she’s been covering for several days (actually years, if you count her first story on the subject, three years ago when Christian homeschoolers filled the terrorist shoes). A school in New Jersey held a mock terrorism drill in which “New Crusaders” attacked the school for expelling a child who was praying before class.
This is but one instance of wacko-ry among others in recent news. A couple more bits of data:
Last week, the BBC reported that a number of schools in Britain have decided to stop teaching about the Holocaust, for fear of offending Muslims. (Translation: we’re afraid these guys might harm some of our people if we teach history which doesn’t jibe with their propaganda)
Also last week, we had an irreverent, anatomically correct chocolate sculpture of Jesus at the center of controversy. It is interesting to juxtapose this with the publication (or should I say non-publication) of Danish newspaper cartoons of the Muslim prophet Mohammed (see right for an example of one of the ‘offending’ cartoons), which suggested (of all things) that Islam and terrorism are linked. The same news publications and media outlets who refused to show the (admittedly tame) offending cartoons “out of respect for Islam” (Translation: we’re afraid these guys might harm some of our people if we publish the cartoons) have had no problem publishing pictures of the chocolate sculpture, and have been irate with Christian response to their insensitivity.
Why the double standard?
Perhaps these media outlets, educators and school districts aren’t afraid of attacking Christians, because decades of evidence have shown that, in general, Christians will protest and may take legal action in their defense. However, followers of Christ don’t tend to strap themselves up with C4, walk into crowded places and blow dozens (or hundreds) of innocent people to smithereens.
So about the NJ school district? I can understand why they wouldn’t want to make their terrorism drill realistic by making the terrorists Islamic. It would just be inviting a REAL terrorist attack. Homers and Christians, on the other hand, may make some noise, but – because of their religious conviction – the repercussions can apparently be ignored without consequence…
