Today, we finished up the California coastal portion of our trip and headed into Oregon.

Best Laid Plans

For Day 7 (June 15, 2010) the plan was this:

Day 7 Planned Travel RouteToday, the plan is to spend the morning hiking and taking in Redwood National Park. After this, we will head up the coast on US-101, leaving California (for now) up the Oregon coastline, where we will stay at Sunset Bay State Park, near Coos Bay, Oregon.

What Actually Transpired

Today, we didn’t get to see as much of the Redwoods as we’d expected, because the road was closed (sadface). Even so, we drove up the coast and spent more time beachcombing, hiking 3-4 miles along Crescent Beach, collecting rocks, shells, and sand dollars. We then stopped in Crescent City to get food for the coming days (pwning Lulu – see below), grab some Pizza(!), and then on up to Oregon, where we got in some more beach time at Sunset Bay, taking pictures of the sunset out on some hard-to-get-to rocks.

Odometer Start: 37289
Odometer End: 37486
Total Miles: 197 miles

Funny/Deep/Odd/Profound Observations

“We sure pwnd Lulu, didn’t we?” (spoken about Lulu, 92, who had only saved $7.50 on her Safeway purchases twice the size of ours, while had saved $15 on ours).

_______________
“Brevity is the soul of wit” (Chris, explaining to Jordan why long explanations of jokes make them less funny)

_______________
“With fronds like these, who needs anemones?” – Jordan, looking in tidal pools

_______________
“Running does not normally entail a significant verbal component” (guess who said this to whom. It’s not that hard.)

_______________
J: “What does this smell like to you?” (holding up the camera case with beach gunk on it)
C: “Decaying vegetable matter.”
J: “It smells like steamed broccoli to me. Ugh.”
