Today was a little bit wet, but quite fun, as we headed up the Oregon Coast

Best Laid Plans

For Day 8 (June 16, 2010) the plan was this:

Day 8 Planned Travel RouteToday, we will be leaving Sunset Bay, at the south end of Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, heading up the coastline, where we’ll likely take a long stop at Cannon Beach on our way to Fort Stevens State Park, at the mouth of the Columbia River, where it enters the Pacific Ocean.

What Actually Transpired

This morning started off with a bit of a panic, with Chris thinking he’d locked the key (our only key) in Kianu. Fortunately, Jordan had been sleeping on top of the key and it was quickly recovered without the need of contracting a locksmith. The day was a little bit wet, with a little bit of rain, but that didn’t slow us down. We drove up the coast, with a few beach stops, along with a long stop at Sea Lion Caves. Later, we stopped at Cannon Beach, before heading to Fort Stevens and setting up our tent for the night. We stopped at Otter Rock, but failed to see any otters (much to Jordan’s dismay, since his recently declared “Favorite Animal of All Time” is the otter). After this, we drove past Cape Foulweather, which cued the worst rain we had all day, and then quit once we were past it. After supper, we went out to the beach to see a shipwreck, along with the mouth of the Columbia River.

Funny/Deep/Odd/Profound Observations

“That’s a land otter…” (Chris to Jordan – referring to a squirrel, after seeing no otters at otter rock)
