Today we went sea kayaking on Freshwater Bay, and explored Port Angeles.
Best Laid Plans
For Day 11 (June 19, 2010) the plan was this:
This morning we have 9 a.m. reservations to go Sea Kayaking for a half-day trip in Freshwater Bay. Assuming we survive, we will head on over to Port Angeles (where we will most likely be in desperate need of doing laundry), after which we will head to the Heart o’ the Hills campground, and up to Hurricane Ridge.
What Actually Transpired
This morning, we woke to find it had rained during the night, so we had to be careful not to soak all the dry stuff while breaking camp. We then headed up to Port Angeles and went sea kayaking with an excellent guide, Peter. He took us from Freshwater Bay (which is salt water) west, through a number of small coves, past salt creek (which is fresh water) where we saw a lot of sea life up close (though no harbor seals – which don’t typically live in harbors). Peter fashioned a pretty cool sounding horn for Jordan out of Bull Kelp, which Jordan then played, scaring away any otters we might have otherwise seen. Jordan also ate several types of Kelp, held a non-stinging jellyfish, and stuck his hand (on purpose) into the center of a sea anemone (which didn’t think he was all that tasty).
After our half-day kayaking trip, we set up the tent (hoping it would dry out during the afternoon) and then headed back to Port Angeles to do our laundry. We knew we should have brought Mom with us (just kidding). We decided to eat out (pizza) and catch a movie (it was Karate Kid or Jonah Hex – and since Karate Kid was an hour longer, we chose that), and then head for “home”.
Odometer Start: 38166
Odometer End: 38232

Funny/Deep/Odd/Profound Observations
Peter: “Hey Jordan, have you ever stuck your finger in a sea anemone?”
Jordan: “No.”
Peter: “It’s a rite of passage into manhood.”
