Why Context Matters V: On Stoning and Casting Stones

It has been pointed out to me that I tend to pick on those more theologically aligned with me than with those who are rather liberal in their theology. Upon reflection, this is a fair criticism, as I guess I would think folks who take the Bible seriously (which, my liberal mainline brothers may claim [...]

A while back, Rob Bell preached on Ephesus, Emperor Worship and Revelation. I had not seen this before I went to Turkey and the Seven Churches last year, nor before writing about them. That said, I think he does a lot better job telling the story about Ephesus and Revelation than I did.
Check it out here.Â

If you are reading this and you are not a Christian, I would encourage you to watch this video and think about what Francis Chan is saying here about God and his relationship to man. If you are a Christian, I would encourage you to watch this and consider its message for yourself – is [...]

Making Godwin a Christian

In the comments over at Sliced Laodicea, Neil S. had an interesting idea to ‘Christianize’ Godwin’s Law:
I think we need a Christian corollary to Godwin’s Law:
“As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of one person claiming they believe the [insert adjective] Word of God approaches one.â€
The person employing the corollary does so to make [...]

John, over at Verum Serum, has done some nice legwork and pulled together an excellent resource on the preterist and (particularly) the partial-preterist view, which I also tend to hold, of eschatology (the $5 word to describe the study of the end times).
Excellent work, John! Here is a link.

(I’ve taken the month of December off for family, and I’m hoping to finish Velvet Elvis study guides in the next month or so.)
Chapter 5 of Velvet Elvis, entitled ‘Dust’, is about rabbis, their disciples (talmidim), and what it means to be a disciple of our rabbi, Jesus. This chapter is heavily influenced by [...]

Stop me if you’ve ever heard someone say this about their church: “I want more meat” or “I want to be fed”. This guy has, and he’s got a diagnosis -
Pastor Steven Furtick has written an excellent article on “Phrases We Need to Ban”, in this post, he writes:
What people say
“I just want some [...]

A couple years ago (and about 40 pounds apiece), Suzanne and I were asked by Zach to help him out with a video for a church service, where the scripture being covered was of Mary and Martha – where Martha was busy serving Jesus, and Mary just wanted to sit at his feet. He had [...]

(Or, why the doctrine of ‘election’ just doesn’t seem to be all that helpful in practice…)
While I don’t normally seek to just tick folks off, I suspect that this post may have that unintended consequence, as I will be touching on a subject I’ve been mulling for some time but avoided posting on specifically. [...]
